The older piggyback tuners did not have the blocked off "EPA" area on their tables. “I want to know what each individual cylinder is doing.” To do this, Pathak installs individual sensors at the header pipes, as far upstream as possible, and especially before the exhaust gasses reach any cross-over pipes. Unless you have a single-cylinder motorcycle, the sensor is located so far downstream that you’re getting an average reading from all the cylinders. While many aftermarket exhausts will have a bung to attach an O2 sensor and read the air/fuel mixture, the reading you’ll get from it is generally useless information. A quick peek at the air/fuel ratio throughout the rev range could also clue us in on spots to improve.Īs the saying goes, the devil is in the details, and it’s here that Pathak clues us in on a fallacy. Dips, flat spots, and irregularities generally point to areas of improvement. Peak power and torque are fun numbers to talk about, but Pathak is more curious about the entire curve. In other words, price and range of vehicles is NOT correlated to knowledge base about a specific package, just that the ability to crack the stock code, find the parameters you wish to manipulate, and a reliable range of values to change said values to.general knowledge about tuning is a given on each bike once you've reached this level.Upon receiving a new bike, the first step Pathak takes is to put it on the dyno to get a baseline run. That may be fine for most of you, but I know I wouldn't want to take that chance knowing i could have a bike running at 13-13.2 but is instead running at 14 or 12.4.ģ) The pricetag for flashing is in the R+D it took to CRACK the ECU's/ECM's coding, NOT the R+D it took to "lean about the specifics of the engine's performance based on the ECU parameters you modify". 5-.8 AFR values throughout the rpm/power band.). These are all things that, in my experience with cars that have THE EXACT SAME MODIFICATIONS, make a big difference (as much as. Accounting for things like elevation, temperature, individual engine performance, best power vs tuning for AFR, etc. Wouldn't ECUnleashed have posted up the AFR's on their dyno's as an additional selling point if they were good?Īfter dealing with the canned flashing industry from the car realm (especially the Hyundai Genesis, RX-8, and Subie crowd) I've realized a few things.ġ) Not all flashes/flashing companies are equal, some can only manipulate certain variables in the ECU, some are too afraid to, and some just want easy money for doing next to no changes.Ģ) A flash has NOTHING on an individualized tune, it is only a half-solution to a standalone ECU or lesser device that has the ability to manipulate the same variables.

Often times when you ask for too much information, it kills the marketing/advertising schema. To us this said a lot about their knowledge into ECU's Here is the list of the flashes ECUnleashed currently has. So far sport rider has done a lot of testing on ECUnleashed as well with very good results form the fz1 to the 2011 zx10. You can get into an ECU but if you can't crack every component then your flash won't be as good as someone elses. This type of things goes to show that not all flashes are the same. They have flashes for the kawi's, but at this time they can't remove the cel's. Some they are even still working on like the cel's for the kawi's. Here is a list of the current bikes they have been able to crack the ecu of and then build a full map for. We went with ECUnleashed as their knowledge seemed leap years ahead of others based on the fact they tune snowmobiles, high end exotic cars, motorcycles, etc. The same as you would compare engine builders or suspension tuners without opening up everything they did and redoing it yourself.

which leaves dealers, riders, every other joe with comparing their experience, who uses them, compare their knowledge based on how many applications they can flash, write up mags, etc.

I'm not saying one sucks or which is hands down better as the only way to do that would be to open both files up and compare, but if you're not one hell of an engineer and break their encrypting then you can't.

Just because someone can tune suspension or build a block doesn't mean it's the same as the next guy who can. Just like building an engine or suspension. It comes down to knowledge, experience, etc. exe fiels doesn't mean what is inside the files is the same or does the same thing. Like computer software, just because you install two. You can flash for just fuel or you can flash for 20+ other things if you have the knowledge, then you need to have the knowledge on what data to replace it with once you figure out how to flash it. Each company has their own flash for all the different specs that they can, or have the ability, to crack.
